Shangila is a unique residential development located on the beautiful Mulegé River. Mulegé, founded in 1705 and with a current population of 4100, is a quiet, mostly traditional Mexican town but it is unique in that is has a year-round flowing river and an oasis atmosphere. Mulegé is repleat with orchards of date palms, bougainvillea, cattle ranches and agricultural farms. Located about 600 miles south of the International border at San Ysidro, Mulegé lies on the east side of the Baja peninsula at the mouth of Bahía Concepción.
A short distance up the Mulegé River from the sandy beach at the north end of Bahía Concepción is the Hotel Serenidad. The hotel is famous for its adjacent 3600 foot airstrip and a 40-year tradition of a Saturday night pig roast complete with an authentic mariachi band.
Shangila is a gated community located one block west of the Hotel Serenidad on the south side of the Mulegé River. Residents enjoy seasonal weather moderated by afternoon breezes from the nearby Sea of Cortez. The water temperature of the Sea varies from a high of about 85 degrees in August and September to a low of about 62 by January and February. Daily air temperatures in the area vary from the mid-60's in winter to the mid-90's in the summer.
Fishing is one of the major activities in the Mulegé area and the waters teem with beautiful acrobatic Dorado and billfish in the summer and hard-fighting yellowtail in the winter. Other species, such as grouper, sierra, pargo and a wide variety of bass-type fish (commonly called Cabrilla by the locals) are abundant year-round. The beautiful and tranquil sandy beaches of Bahía Concepción are located a mere 12 miles south of Mulegé. Other sporting activities include snorkeling, diving, bicycling, riding ATV's and, for the less adventurous, beachcombing.
The Mulegé town center is located 2 miles west from Shangila. A dirt trail/road along the river offers an inviting walk to town and a chance to enjoy the wide variety of wildlife found along the river. Herons, egrets, pelicans, 6 species of sea gulls, ospreys, frigate birds, brilliant crimson vermillion flycatchers, a variety of doves, orioles, finches and numerous tiny hummingbirds are readily found along the river. With luck, the resident might also catch a glimpse of a raccoon, coyote, wild sheep or deer. Out in the Sea of Cortez, one might expect to see a variety of whales, orcas, sea lions or porpoises.
Locally grown fruits and vegetables can be delivered to your door by local vendors. They deliver seasonably available peas, beans, radishes, carrots, cilantro, lettuce, tomatoes, cauliflower and beets just to name a few. Also available are oranges, grapefruit, key limes, papayas and mangos.
The one thing Mulegé lacks is a wild night life. There are a number of fine restaurants that remain open until a reasonable hour and the aforementioned pig roast at the Hotel Serenidad every Saturday evening is a classic event. All things considered, Mulegé is pretty laid back and a really fun place to live.
